Man and Other Natural Disasters by Nerys Parry: Review

I have a very special author here with me today on the blog and I think you will really enjoy.  She is here to discuss what she wants readers to take away from her book Man and Other Natural Disasters.  I am excited to be able to share her with you and check back on the 31st for my review of her book!

Many thanks to Nurture Your Books Virtual Tourz for allowing me to feature this author!

About the Author:

Nerys Parry’s writing has aired on CBC radio and appeared in diverse publications. Her work has been shortlisted for the Kenneth R. Wilson Canadian Business Press Award, FreeFall’s Fall Fiction Contest, and the Event Non-Fiction Award. Man & Other Natural Disasters, finalist for the Colophon Prize, is her first novel. Parry holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Queen’s and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from UBC. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, two children, one dog, two cats and her son's colony of ants.

About the Novel:

Simon Peters, a bookbinder full of theories on everything from heart-broken shrimp to the consciousness of DNA, is hiding from his horrific past in the basement of the Calgary City Library. Enter Minerva, a twenty-two-year-old student. Her ghostly resemblance to Simon’s dead sister compels him to reveal the shocking story of the various natural disasters that killed his family. But Simon’s story does not add up. When he finds Minerva bleeding on his bathroom floor, he must conquer the tyranny of his own memory and confront what really happened that summer of 1962. But the truth proves no less confounding, or tragic, than the original tale.

My Thoughts:

First of all let me start by saying how pretty this book is.  When I received it, my first thought was how nice it was - it has this beautifully textured binding along the spine and it really does add character to the novel.

The cover is attractive and with a young boy standing in the road watching a nearby hurricane.  It absolutely catches a reader's attention and made me want to open it immediately.  Additionally, I love the script used for the title - it is two different kinds and it really does add to the overall appeal of the novel.  The title is catchy and added to my curiosity about what this novel is about.

I loved the prologue, here is my favorite excerpt:

I will tell you a secret.
I know how I'm going to die.  I do now know when, and I do not know why, but I do know how.  And that is a terrible enough thing to live with.
How do I know with such certainty?
Fire, the most decisive element, devoured my sister first.  Not long after her last ember had cooled, Earth swallowed my father.  Then, not to be outdone, Air, the breath and will of the heavens themselves, swept up my mother.
And so you see, by some democracy of the Gods, I have been left to the Waters.
Now I will tell you my story.

This story is full of twists and turns and surprises.  I was amazed as I journeyed through Simon's mind just how deep humans beings can be and just how intricate our thoughts are.

This novel is DEEP!  And that is what I loved so much about it.  I enjoyed delving into a novel that really made me think, it really made me wonder.  There is also much more to this than just the storyline, it is sprinkled with many other experiences such as how to repair a book (Simon's passion) to the experience of a baby being born.  Those add more layers to this novel and add to its thought-provoking nature.

Kudos to Narys Parry, this novel was great and I am truly looking forward to seeing more from her!

Author Guest Post: Nerys Parry of Man and Other Natural Disasters

I have a very special author here with me today on the blog and I think you will really enjoy.  She is here to discuss what she wants readers to take away from her book Man and Other Natural Disasters.  I am excited to be able to share her with you and check back on the 31st for my review of her book!

Many thanks to Nurture Your Books Virtual Tourz for allowing me to feature this author!

Parry holds a Bachelor of Applied Science from Queen’s and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from UBC. She lives in Ottawa with her husband, two children, one dog, two cats and her son's colony of ants.

What do I want reader’s to take away from my book?

First and foremost, I hope they discover pleasure, joy, and delight in the language and story, and that at least one line sings for each and every reader.

I want readers to close the cover knowing at least one interesting thing about the world they didn’t know before, like where Calgary got its name, or how water has a memory, or that shrimp can die of a broken heart.  I want them to emerge from the fiction feeling Simon’s deep fascination with the amazing mystery of life.

I also hope Simon’s story will stir up in each reader a compassion for all children across the world over who have been indoctrinated, institutionalized, or raised in terror. While Simon’s is only one fictionalized account, it gives an insight into how violence breeds more violence, and how difficult it can be to escape that cycle. This message seems all the more important today in light of increasing militarism and ‘tough’ acts on crime.

On that note, while I confess I never set out to write a ‘political’ book, many readers who have been moved by Simon’s story have told me that one of the most important things they took from the novel was a fresh perspective on some of the “big issues” facing us in the world today. While it seems a grandiose thing to say, I do hope other readers discover this aspect as well. Without giving too much away, readers have mentioned how the historical portions of the novel gave them new perspective into the growing threat of religious extremism, the disregard of human rights in the name of the ‘war on terror’, and the ongoing, difficult battle of our age—how to define where freedom of religion ends and “criminal activity” begin. Most current examples of this conflict in the news include the statutory rape charges against the Sons of Latter Day Saints leader Jeff Warren in Texas, and the fight to keep polygamy illegal in Canada.

For me, this is the power of historical fiction; by looking deeply into our past we can gain insight into how we should (and maybe shouldn’t) react to threats. Remembering and understanding where we may have made mistakes, such as in enforced residential schooling, is the key to not repeating them.
But of all these things, both big and small, what do I wish most? That readers enjoy the book, and relish the read.

Deena Remiel: Author Interview

You are in for a real treat today as I have a really unique author visiting the blog today to talk about her new book Relic.  Read on as I uncover a wide variety of topics with Deena Remiel!

Thanks to Marissa over at Sizzling PR for allowing me a spot on this tour!

About the Novel:

Raphael, a Brethren Savior, an angel with a forgotten past, has lost his power to heal and is on a self-imposed guilt trip to get it back. If he can’t, his tour of eternal duty as Brethren Savior will be revoked. On his journey, he winds up enmeshed in a web of attempted murder and resurrection all thanks to a woman he’s only seen in a photograph and by chance on an Arizona desert hiking trail.

Serena Sikes is a wanted woman. Desired by “undesirables” for a gift her brother gave her- a stolen relic with suspected healing powers. Hunted down in the Arizona desert and left for dead, she is found by none other than the angel who cannot heal.

Raphael and Serena are inexorably bound together, for locked deep within the relic’s heart had lived the soul of his long lost wife. Now, it resides inside Serena. Evil lurks around every corner as Raphael tries to keep both Serena and his dead wife’s soul alive and lustful temptation at bay.

Three souls bound together by an ancient relic, bound by a timeless gift, and bound by a love that is eternal.

About the Author:

It was the mystique of Arizona’s history and landscape that called to Deena and catapulted her career as an author. When she’s not writing romance novels and poetry in the wee, small hours of the morning or in the deep, dark of night, Deena teaches language arts to middle school students. She currently lives in Gilbert with her husband and two children, but New Jersey will always tug at her heartstrings. She loves connecting with her fans, so find her at deenaremiel.com

Deena on TWITTER

Author Interview:

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I was taught to play the piano when I was very young. As I grew, I became interested in music and musical theatre. That lent itself to exploring song-writing and poetry. From there, I moved into short story, journaling, and finally, novels.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

RELIC is the second book in the Brethren Series. It picks up where Trinity, the first book, ends. Raphael, Brethren Savior, is tasked with notifying the sister of a dead man that he is indeed dead and giving her his personal affects. Serena, the sister, has been hunted down and left for dead in the Arizona desert, and he happens upon her on a healing journey of his own. You’ll have to read the book to find out how they are inexorably bound together!

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Finding the time to write is quite a challenge because I am a full-time teacher. So when a break comes along, or the weekend, I run to find my quiet place to write.

In Leah's Wake by Terri Giuliano: Review

This book has been on my radar for a while and keeps popping up throughout the web as I cruise among different sites, that must be a sign from God that I am supposed to read and review it!  I am delighted to finally be able to feature Terri and her novel on my blog this week, it has been a long time coming!

About the Novel:

Protecting their children comes naturally for Zoe and Will Tyler—until their daughter Leah decides to actively destroy her own future.

Leah grew up in a privileged upper-middle class world. Her parents spared no expense for her happiness; she had all-but secured an Ivy League scholarship and a future as a star athlete. Then she met Todd.

Leah’s parents watch helplessly as their daughter falls into a world of drugs, sex, and wild parties. While Will attempts to control his daughter’s every move to prevent her from falling deeper into this dangerous new life, Zoe prefers to give Leah slack in the hope that she may learn from her mistakes. Their divided approach drives their daughter out of their home and a wedge into their marriage.

Twelve-year-old Justine observes Leah’s rebellion from the shadows of their fragmented family. She desperately seeks her big sister’s approval and will do whatever it takes to obtain it. Meanwhile she is left to question whether her parents love her and whether God even knows she exists.

What happens when love just isn’t enough? Who will pay the consequences of Leah’s vagrant lifestyle? Can this broken family survive the destruction left in Leah’s wake?

This mesmerizing debut novel tells the tale of a contemporary American family caught in the throes of adolescent rebellion – a heartbreaking, funny, ultimately redemptive quest for love, independence, connection and grace.

In Leah’s Wake is the 2011 BOOK BUNDLZ BOOK CLUB PICK  and recipient of the Coffee Time Reviewers Recommend (CTRR) Award. This award, as selected by reviewers, recognizes outstanding writing styles in all book types and genres.

Book Excerpt:

Prologue

March

Justine strikes a pose before the full-length mirror hanging on her closet door. Chin up, hands by her sides. She draws a breath. “My dear. . .” she begins, and stops mid-sentence. Wrinkles her nose. She’s got it all wrong. She’s too—Too stiff. Too grownup. Too something.

She rakes her fingers over her short dark hair, sweeping the bangs out of her eyes, tugs at the hem of her pink baby-doll pajamas. She’s scheduled to deliver the candidates’ address at her Confirmation Mass this afternoon. When she learned, six months ago, that she had been selected speaker, Justine was ecstatic. Now, the very idea of standing in front of the whole congregation, telling hundreds, maybe thousands, of people how she’s learned from her own family what it means to be part of God’s larger family makes her sick to her stomach.

She has no choice. She made a commitment.

About the Novel:

Memories of Mom (M.O.M.) is a poignant story about an extraordinary mother, written by a daughter who loved and cared for her during her last lap of life.  This story is written from the heart, and will inspire love and affection in millions of daughters and sons who will someday be caring for their elderly parents or loved ones.  It is about undying love, unyielding sacrifices and compassionate role reversal.  The circle of life.

Watch the Trailer:

My Thoughts:

Before you even think of picking up this book make sure you have a block of time when you will not be disturbed because you will not want to put this down and if you are forced to, you will spend the time away doing nothing but thinking about this novel!

Anyone who holds family dear to them will love this book and be touched by every page.  This is a real tribute from a daughter to her mother who she took care of in the final stages of her life.  This story isn't all sad, it will have readers grabbing for the tissues and on the next page laughing out loud!

This is a true story of the evolution of a relationship and how it comes full circle - a mother who teaches her daughter about faith, family, and love...all attributes and qualities that the daughter will use to help her mother as her health declines.

Another neat aspect of this novel is how the author weaves her own story in and out of her mother's.  I am really beginning to love stories that show multiple story lines and this one is amazing.

I sincerely recommend this novel to my readers - you will love this journey and it will inspire you to think about your own family relationships.

Snowy Fate by Marissa Dobson: Book Spotlight & Review

Romance lovers get ready...this short story is a must-read if you love this genre, you won't be disappointed!  Sizzling PR is hosting this tour and I am delighted to have a spot!

About the Short Story:

Fate always knows when you're ready for love.

The past is catching up with Aspyn Layton. The father she never knew passed away and she is left to deal with his estate. An unexpected snowstorm has her stranded at the one place she didn’t want to be—her father’s house—with a naked man.

Damon Andrews has a secret, one he shared with Aspyn’s father. He must convince Aspyn there is more to life then what she knows. How will she react when she finds out he is a mountain lion, and she is his mate? Their fates are intertwined.

About the Author:

Born and raised in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area, I now reside about an hour from Washington, D.C. I am a lady who likes to keep busy, and am always busy doing something. With two different college degrees, I believe you are never done learning.

Being the first daughter to an avid reader, this gave me the advantage of learning to read at a young age. Since learning to read I have always had my nose in a book. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I started writing down the stories I came up with.

I am blessed with a wonderful supportive husband, Thomas. He is my other half and allows me to stay home and pursue my writing. My writing buddies Max (a cocker spaniel) and Dawne (a beagle mix) are always around to listen to me bounce ideas off them. They might not be able to answer, but they are helpful in their own ways.

My Thoughts:

Many of the commentary regarding Snowy Fate states that it was too short but if you go into it acknowledging that it is a novella or a short story then that eliminates any disappointment.  I thought for a short story, which I usually don't like because I am more of a full length novel kind of person, this was great!

I enjoy a good romance novel from time-to-time and this one hit the spot.  I like this author and I like her writing, it is simple, clear and to-the-point.  So much so that I would really like to read something longer by her, I bet it is great!

This is a classic romance story with all of the usual elements but it was well-worth the read and something that I would highly recommend to other readers.  Quick and a great short story to fill in the holes between novels.

The Illusion of Certainty by Greg Messel: Review

I am so lucky to have another day with Greg Messel and his novel The Illusion of Certainty.  Yesterday he stopped by to talk about how times are changing in the book world and today I am providing what I think is a great review of his novel!  Big thanks to Pump Up Your Book Virtual Tours for allowing me two spots on this great tour!

About the Novel:

"The Illusion of Certainty" follows two parallel story lines. Marc is a successful businessman who seems to have everything-a great job, a beautiful wife, a house in an upscale neighborhood of Portland, Oregon and two great kids who are preparing for college. But something is not right. Marc is unsettled by the sudden change in his wife, Aimee, who seems distant and unhappy. What is going on with her? The second storyline involves a successful young attorney Alexandra Mattson. Alex, as she is called by her friends, meets a handsome young cop, Sean, during an unexpected crisis in her neighborhood. Sean and Alex seem made for each other and begin to merge their futures in a world of uncertainty. The only certainty in life is that we will face uncertainty. Despite all of the technology and controls available in the modern world, sometimes the only comfort comes from the human touch.

About the Author:

Greg Messel has written three novels and three unpublished memoirs. He published his premiere novel “Sunbreaks” in 2009, followed by “Expiation” in 2010 and “The Illusion of Certainty” in 2011. Greg has had a newspaper career as a columnist, sportswriter and news editor. He won a Wyoming Press Association Award as a columnist. Greg also spent many years in the corporate world as a Financial Manager. He now devotes his energies to writing at his home in Edmonds, Washington on the Puget Sound just north of Seattle, where he lives with his wife, Carol.

You can visit his website at www.gregmessel.com.  Connect with Greg on Twitter at www.twitter.com/gregmessel or Facebook at www.facebook.com/greg.messel.

My Thoughts:

I have read some of the other reviews on this novel and they all follow the same theme: amazing, edge-of-your-seat realistic romance that is a home run!  I would have to agree and add that this author has quickly risen to the top of my "authors to follow" list.  He had me captivated with this story from the very first chapter.

This novel was comprised of two story lines that the author carefully weaves together so that they compliment each other and allow the reader just enough break from each story to peak interest.  I am sometimes confused by multiple story lines or too many characters but this just wasn't the case with this novel.  Messel is careful in how he tells the stories and they really are both critical to the overall impact of the novel.

I will say that this is an emotional read as infidelity is a sensitive subject and one that the author presents in a really appropriate way.  I think the story about John and Aimee could be anyone's story and my heart just hurt for them both and their situation.  I was definitely more taken with this story line over the other one with Alexandra, an attorney from Portland.

I like an author that can "keep it real" and this book was a fine example of that - and it has been a while since I have stumbled across a story that indeed does feel so very real so I thoroughly appreciated it.  If you are into realistic fiction check this novel out, you won't be disappointed.

From what I understand this is Greg's third novel so I am now on the prowl for the other two!

About the Novel:

"The Illusion of Certainty" follows two parallel storylines.

The Times They Are A’Changin’
By Greg Messel

I remember the days not long ago when one of my favorite pastimes was browsing the racks of music stores. I not only enjoyed the music but I loved the process of the hunt for new CDs.

Then the technology came along where I could load my CDs and burn my own CD mixes for playing in my car or on my portable CD player when I was running outside or on a treadmill. Wow, burning my own CDs–how could it get better than that?

It did.

I bought my first iPod which I could fit into the pocket of my running shorts which contained hundreds of songs. I then discovered iTunes and began downloading music. Then I reached one conclusion–I needed a bigger iPod. Now I had one small one to play music while I was working out and a bigger one to play in my car or home. All of my favorite music could fit in my shirt pocket.
I found that in the process of downloading music I discovered new bands and new types of music. The shelves were never empty at iTunes and the CD or song I was looking for was never out of stock

Then I found there was really no point to browsing the music stores. My visits to places like Tower Records or the wonderful Music Millennium store in Portland, Oregon became less and less frequent.

Soon these record stores began disappearing. I was sad when these stores began closing. Then I realized it had been a long time since I purchased anything at the stores I love.

Not only were the music stores disappearing but so were the CDs which lined several shelves in my home. Why do I need CDs? I NEVER just play a CD. If I wanted to hear an album by an artist I could just switch to the album mode on my iPod. I finally let go of the security blanket or having the CDs on the bookshelf at home. I had hoarded them like they were an endangered species that I must preserve for future generations.

Then I realized the folly of having stacks of CDs from the past that will never be played again.

A couple of years ago when my second novel “Expiation” was published I got a call from my daughter who told me “I’ve been listening to ‘Expiation’ as I drive to work and back each day.

“Really?” I didn’t remember anyone making an audio version of my novel. “How are you doing that I asked?”

She informed me that she had “Expiation” loaded on her Kindle, then uses the voice reading feature on her Kindle and listens to my book being read to her through the car stereo system.

Oh yeah? Is it a female voice or male voice? She said she switched it to a male voice since “Expiation” is written in first person and narrated by the main male character.

No way!

I noticed Kindle sales of my books starting to show up on royalty statements from my publisher.

I attended the LA Festival of Books for a book signing and there was lots of talk about e books. Suddenly, everyone was talking about e books.

Things seemed to be changing.

On Christmas morning, 2010, there were two Kindles under my Christmas tree–one for me and one for my techno-phobe wife. I was dragging her into the new world whether she wanted to go or not. I got into a frenzy of downloading on Christmas day. My Visa card company called me on December 26th checking “an unusual amount” of activity with purchases from Amazon. Well, yeah, guilty as charged.

Suddenly I started to wonder why I have all of these bookshelves in my house.

I’ve stopped browsing book stores.. On our nightstands where there used to be stacks of books are now two Kindles.

Hmmm. This is a familiar pattern.

Now I've written a third book "The Illusion of Certainty" and the focus of my marketing has been for Kindles, iBooks and Nooks. People in London, Atlanta, San Francisco, Canada and Texas have all contacted me recently telling me how much they've enjoyed reading my new book on their devices for a mere $2.99.

In just over two years, I've completely changed as a reader...and as an author.

This time, the stakes are higher – what seems to be a demon rebellion has broken out in hell and the Earth is plunged into chaos. Their problem is, no one – not even Lucifer himself – knows who the rebel leader is. It seems only Keira, her frightened but determined friends, and a new ally – a demon named Eligos - can find out who this person or thing is, why they are suddenly causing so much bloodshed, pain and upset for everyone, and destroy them.

Bloody awesome battles, amazing feats of magic, and a stronger-than-death passion, make for an intoxicating, unforgettable read in this powerfully imagined fantasy...

About the Author:

I have lived in Droylsden, Manchester all my life. I live with my parents and my younger sister, Cheryl. I never knew what I wanted to do with my life until I began writing. This is my dream.

I get most of my inspiration from music, I’ll sit there listening to it and suddenly I’m no longer in the room. My stories play like videos in my mind then I go and write them down.

I’m a very dark person, I love anything spooky, supernatural, or unexplainable, and so that’s the genre I want to write in for the rest of my life. I love watching scary films, although I find it very hard to find one these days that actually frighten me.

The March by E.L. Doctorow: Review

I just finished reading a historical fiction selection that goes hand-in-hand with one of my goals this year, to read lots of Civil War literature in honor of the sesquicentennial of the War Between the States.  This novel covered what Sherman's march through the South must have been like, and it was well worth the read.

About the Novel:

In 1864, Union general William Tecumseh Sherman marched his sixty thousand troops through Georgia to the sea, and then up into the Carolinas. The army fought off Confederate forces, demolished cities, and accumulated a borne-along population of freed blacks and white refugees until all that remained was the dangerous transient life of the dispossessed and the triumphant. In E. L. Doctorow’s hands the great march becomes a floating world, a nomadic consciousness, and an unforgettable reading experience with awesome relevance to our own times.

About the Author:

Famous American Jewish writer, Edgar Laurence Doctorow is the author of several critically acclaimed novels that blend history and social criticism. Although he had written books for years, it was not until the publication of The Book of Daniel in 1971 that he obtained acclaim. His next book, Ragtime, was a commercial and critical success. As of 2006, he held the Glucksman Chair in American Letters at New York University. Doctorow's personal papers are held by the Fales Library at NYU.

Doctorow was raised in the Bronx, New York, by parental folks of second-generation Russian Jewish descent. At the Bronx High School of Science, he excelled in art making. Doctorow was a voracious reader and continued his education at Kenyon College where he studied with John Crowe Ransom. After graduating with honors in 1952, he did graduate work at Columbia University before he was drafted into the army and assigned to Germany. He began his career as a reader at Columbia Pictures, moved on to become an editor for New American Library in the early 1960s and worked as chief editor at Dial Press from 1964 to 1969.

He delivered a commencement address critical of President George W. Bush at Hofstra University on May 23, 2004.

My Thoughts:

As I mentioned above, this novel is well worth the read.  I stumbled across it while perusing the fiction section of my local library and I am glad that I found this one!

Told through many various perspectives of people who truly could have been found along Sherman's march through the South, this novel gives a wide variety of viewpoints and the author does a great job representing all perspectives.  My only critique of that would be that it felt sometimes like there were too many perspectives and too much time between each one so that as a reader I would almost forget the person and their circumstance until reading more about them again.  However, I do not think this detracts from the overall impact of the novel as it still is a very complete story.

The author's take on what was happening in the minds of men like General Sherman, Abraham Lincoln, and others is fascinating and I enjoyed reading from his vision.  What happened during that year of 1864-1865 was a terrible time for the South but throughout the book you find sprinkled inspirations through the characters that lived there, you see hope for a new beginning.

I have now become a big fan of this author - I look forward to checking out more of his work and highly recommend him and this novel to anyone interested in historical fiction or literature about the Civil War.

The Weaver by Kai Strand: Review

Lovers of young adult literature get ready, this is one to add to your classroom library and personal collection.  I am thrilled to be able to share it with you and my thanks go out to the author for the opportunity to read and review it.

About the Novel:

In a town of word weavers, Mary suffers through her third year of Novice Word Weaving. Mary thinks her troubles are over when she meets a gnome-elf who grants her a wish. But instead of weaving a better story, she's weaving strange yarn charms to accompany her still pathetic tales.

Suggested age for readers: 9-12

About the Author:

Kai Strand writes middle grade and young adult fiction. She was born and raised in the mid-west, where she inherited a wholesome outlook on life. She lived in California long enough to find a husband and have four kids. Now they live in Central Oregon, which boasts the bluest sky you'll ever see and miles and miles of hiking trails to enjoy it from.

Kai has a Facebook page: Kai Strand, Author. But her favorite stall tactic from writing is answering email. If you have a question about her or her writing, email her at kaistrand (at) yahoo (dot) com.

My Thoughts:

Interestingly enough in a book with many beautiful and well-written words I cannot find the right ones to describe just how much I loved this book!  It is a delightful read and I am inspired by the story.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of this novel is the language and that would make sense being that it is a book about words and about storytelling.  Kai is magnificent in her writing about Mary and her journey into the world of word-weaving...I mean, her name is Mary Wordsmith, how appropriate and adorable is that?

The gnome and the elements of fantasy will capture a variety of young readers thirsty for the "other beings" that are inhabiting more and more literature.  The moral lesson will capture parents and teachers and Mary herself will inspire others to begin their storytelling adventure.

Kai uses simple yet striking language in the book and it truly is the best element.  It just seems like she chooses just the right words to describe each element of the story and it truly captures the reader's imagination.

One of the highlights while reading was the quote at the beginning of each chapter that really were thought-provoking as if the reader was being lured into the chapter.

5 star rating on this novel, it is a keeper and one that I am adding to my classroom library and highly recommending to my students.  Thanks Kai!
