TGIF is hosted by GReads! Her question this week is:
How do you feel about explicit content and language in young adult books?
To be honest, I just don't see a place for it - it doesn't add anything to a book (in my opinion) and exposes our kids to things that they just don't need to be exposed to. I understand that this is day-to-day reality for many kids, but literature should not be one more place where they get it. I also happen to believe that there isn't a place for explicitness in adult literature either - some of the best stories and movies out there are as clean as can be, and I don't feel like a novel is made better just because it is racy. All just my opinion, but I will skip obscene part in movies and books - just not my style!
Next there is the Book Blogger Hop hosted by crazy-for-books.com, another great book blog to check out...her question this week is:
I absolutely do this...I read one Emily Giffin book last summer and went out and bought all that I could find - and I loved all of them! I also love Lois Lowry, so her books are always winners for me. Laurie Halse Anderson is another favorite with her Revolutionary War trilogy. I love finding an author I really like - and it is interesting to read a bunch by an author and see how different and alike each book is.

This question is very telling about the place in my life right now...on my playlist (and in my CD player in my car) are the following:
- Kid's All-Sing Along
- Duck, Duck, Goose - Book on Tape
- Green Eggs and Ham - Book on Tape
- George Strait (for those rare moments when the kids are NOT in the car)
Oooooh I LOVE George Strait. Classic.
ReplyDeleteOh how cute! Dr. Seuss on tape. We have never done that with the kids. We usually just do kiddie music. They get stuck on "We Sing Halloween" aaallll year round. :)
ReplyDeleteStalking authors is one of the best parts of being a book lover! & I agree with Jennifer; the Dr. Seuss on tape is so cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by :)
I am the newest follower in your blog.
ReplyDeleteI like colorful usage of language in books! Saying that, I don't mean cursing and vulgar stuff, but little spice is always good for books.
I do make a difference in YA books and Adult books and of course, writers of YA books should be little more careful what kind of language they are using!
LOL Aww don't worry you are not alone! I have three nieces and one nephew.. I have similar songs to listen to when they come by loll! Thank you for the follow, followed back! Also it would be awesome if you can add a way to follow by e-mail :)
ReplyDeleteAww thank you for the Follow Friday love! I hear you on the kids music lol. Luckily mine have found a taste for mine ( not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing yet) hehe
ReplyDeleteI love your layout
I love George Strait! I agree with you on language in YA books. Some are just way tooo strong. I read Wonderland and it was that way for me.

I remember the days of listening to kids songs! Now my kids pretty much listen to the same music as me. lol! Thanks for following my blog! I'm now following you in return!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you explicit content in YA books. I sometimes get annoyed when it's there. Although I haven't come across it to often. I kind of expect it in Adult novels though, especially the romance kind.
ReplyDeleteThanks for following, I followed back.
Thank you for stopping by my blog! Have a great weekend

New follower passing through and returning your follow. In my car on the CD player it's Disney Hits ... what can I say my nephew is 3 and rules the car stereo when I have him. Rules everywhere if you let him.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! Following you back :) I'm currently listening to the Last Sacrifice and I have to say I'm really enjoying the whole audiobook thing! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteHi, Lindsay! Thanks for following me, I'm very happy to follow you back :)
ReplyDeleteI love your playlist btw. In fact, I'm listening to Lullatone right now. They are a husband-wife duo who made this whimsical, child-like music. They are awesome! One of their album, Elevator Music is free for download.
Anyway, have a great weekend!
I respect your opinion in regards to the TGIF post, however I disagree with it :P You can represent explicit material in a respectful, mature way in YA books & I see nothing wrong with that. A lot of teens look to literature as guidance so why not be real with them?
ReplyDeleteThank you for participating this week! TGIF!
I love new books from authors I love. Just hopping by, new follower.
ReplyDeleteCoreena
Thanks so much for becoming a follower of my site! I love the look of your site, great colors so I'm now your newest follower. And I ADORE Dr. Seuss so I'm kinda jealous of your playlist.

Thank you for stopping by my blog, I"m a new follower!
ReplyDeleteHopping back from follow friday. In response to your TGIF answer I agree with you somewhat about it not really being needed in YA. But the reality is it's kind of needed to show kids to wait for someone it's worth doing it with. Which they need to know because I know that the middle schoolers here are experimenting, and that's just way too young.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with it not having a place in adult literature. But that's just me.
Have a great weekend!
Hi
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Book'd Out earlier! My girls are currently huge Justin Beiber fans and are only allowed to listen to him with headphones on LOl

HAHA! I have been playing around with fonts today because mine was just too boring :) I wondered if it was too much, but we'll try it out!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow and comments everyone!
I love George Strait. And I'm definitely not a stranger to kids' sing a longs. :-P Thanks for stopping by! Happy weekend. Hope you have a wonderful Easter.
ReplyDeleteI like buying a lot of books by the same author and go over them, I think that when you read one after the other you can start to see how an author has evolved and it's fun. :)
ReplyDeleteHi! New follower here!
ReplyDeleteI often buy books based on previous books by the author. If I like the style, why not read more of it?
I agree about swearing and over-graphic scenes... but a little kissing never hurt anything. :)
Have a great weekend!
