Mailbox Monday...hosted by Book Journey.

It's Monday, time to share what I have read over the last week, and what is on the nightstand (and in the purse, and on the Nook, etc.) for this week.

Last week, I finished up Moon Over Manifest which I adored...you can view that review here. I was sad to come to the end of that novel, it is a story which you never want to leave.

This week, I am continuing with a book I am really into - Deadly by Julie Chibbaro. It is the story of a young girl growing up in the early 1900s. She is much more interested in science and discovery than she is sitting in school where she is being taught to be a proper lady. When a job opportunity comes up for her to work for an investigator with the Department of Health, she jumps even though it is not "seemly" for a young lady to do so.

In her new job, she spends her days traveling around investigating the causes of diseases such as typhoid fever. I can already tell that she is going to learn more about herself than anything through this work. What I am loving about this novel more than anything is that she is a young lady doing something not expected of young women during her time. She is not content with learning how to be a proper lady, getting married, and having babies - she is forging into new territory.

Another awesome part of this book are the illustrations throughout. When she is describing certain things, there are hand-drawn illustrations throughout to show them - below are some examples of that:

And my weekend was made whole yesterday when I opened my amazon.com box that had been in the mailbox since Saturday...in it was something I ordered and can't wait to start:

What have you been reading or are starting this week?

  2. Just posted a review for Alan B. Johnston's Counting from Zero here http://yougottareadreviews.blogspot.com/ Excellent read but very scary that it is slowly becoming a reality. Have to post reviews for True Colors and True Vision by Joyce Lamb - FANTASTIC READS! And reading CJ Lyons Snake Skin right now. Loving it so far. I love how there are illustrations in Deadly. Looks like an intriguing read! Adding it to my list of books to read. It's so ridiculously long. :) You guys have a fun filled Easter!
